As of October 21, the number of coronavirus cases reported in Louisiana increased by 718 and the number of deaths had increased by 12, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

The total number of cases in the state is now at 177,399 and the number of deaths is 5,584 as of Wednesday.

LDH reports that 165,282 patients are "presumed recovered." (These numbers are normally updated on Mondays. The last update was on 10/19/20).

According to LDH, because of the daily removal of newly identified duplicates and out of state cases, the new case increase may not match the difference between Wednesday’s and Tuesday's total case count.

The collection dates for most of these cases fall between October 13 and October 20, 2020.

LDH states that 98% of the cases reported to the state Wednesday were community spread, while 2% of the cases reported to the state Wednesday were in congregate settings.

People aged 29 and under represent 35% of these cases, LDH states, while 26% are individuals between 18-29.

Since Tuesday, 14,302 new tests have been reported to the state, bringing the total number of tests to 2,627,671.

According to LDH, 608 people are currently hospitalized across the state as of Oct. 20 (up 22 from Monday), and 68 of those are on ventilators as of Oct. 20 (up 6 from Monday).

LDH is reporting 62 hospitalizations in Region 4 - Acadiana as of Oct. 20 (up 7 from Monday), and 7 of those are on ventilators as of Oct. 20 (up 2 from Monday).
