A group from Westminster Christian Academy in Opelousas spent their Saturday in Sulphur, moving debris from Hurricane Laura.

Parents, staff, and student-athletes, totaling 37 people, hauled trees and cleaned debris from the properties of elderly community members. The school says that one couple’s yard was filled with the metal roofing from their shed along with many fallen trees.

WCA Head Football Coach Patrick Clarkston helped organize the relief effort. “One of my main objectives is serving our communities. I believe that’s what Christ wants us to do, and I want to lead the kids into opportunities to serve others whenever we can.”

The school says that the group worked with the pastor of Houston River Baptist Church in the cleanup process.

“After we helped one older couple, we asked if any of their neighbors needed assistance, and they pointed us a few houses down. We were able to go help a lady who was new to the neighborhood, and had several fallen trees in her yard,” said Coach Clarkston. “We had the adults using chainsaws and equipment to haul the big limbs, and the students picked up other debris. In just one day, we were able to assist three families in need.”

The Athletic Departments also organized a school supply drive for Hackberry High School. Students collected binders, loose-leaf paper, pens, etc. to assist the school’s softball players as they get back on their feet and back in the classroom.
