On February 12, 2021, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 27 about 4 miles south of Sulphur. The crash claimed the life of 80-year-old David Lee Richard of Sulphur.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Toyota pickup truck, driven by Richard, was traveling north on LA 27. For reasons still under investigation, Richard entered a left hand curve and crossed the center line into the opposing lane of travel. At the same time, a 2012 Ford Expedition, was traveling south on LA 27 and was struck head-on by the Toyota.

Richard, who was not restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford was properly restrained and was transported to an area hospital with moderate injuries. Toxicology samples were obtained from Richard and the driver of the Ford and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day or night. Statistics show the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained but the decision not to wear a seat belt can have deadly consequences. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always wear a seat belt.

Troop D has investigated 3 fatal crashes resulting in 3 deaths in 2021.
