Limited free laundry service is now available for people who don't have access to machines, water or detergent in the wake of Hurricane Laura.

The program, which provides one load per person per week via self-service or drop-off service, is a partnership of United Way of Southwest Louisiana, Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter and Catholic Charities.

Community members in need may choose between self-service or a voucher program for dropoff service at Ray’s Laundry Service, 2020 Moeling Street, Lake Charles. Services are available for free at one load, per person, per week. Laundry detergent is provided by Catholic Charities.

Community members in need can visit Catholic Charities, 1225 2nd Street, Lake Charles, LA at 8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, to sign up for self-service or to receive a voucher for drop-off services.

“Many of the everyday services we take for granted like laundry have been stripped away in Hurricane Laura’s aftermath,” said Denise Durel, United Way of Southwest Louisiana president and CEO. “Our hope is that this community gift will remind Southwest Louisiana residents that we see every struggle, we are here for them and we won’t rest until the region is completely restored.”

“Citizens from every walk of life are facing crisis after crisis from Laura’s devastation,” Hunter said. “Even having a means of doing laundry has become difficult but it is my honor to help meet that simple need."
