Amid the recovery efforts in Southwest Louisiana, there is still a need and neighbors are helping neighbors.
In Lake Charles, a lot of crews are still setting up shop, handing out supplies and making sure people have a hot meal.
At Living Word Christian Center, the line was wrapped around the block as people waited in line to get cleaning supplies, bottled water, a hot meal and other essential items. The Pastor also handed out $25 gift cards for people to spend however they see fit.
"Several months ago, we were giving away food during the pandemic and this is just a continuation of giving and sowing and blessing people, especially during this season we're in," said Bishop Joe Banks, Senior Pastor at Living Word Christian Center. "Everybody has some need in this city. Laura affected almost everyone. They're extremely grateful to get cleaning supplies, a hot meal and a gift card. It puts a smile on people's faces."
Veronica Barker waited in line and said, "This means so much to us. We are grateful and so blessed."
Barker said like so many, her family is in need following Hurricane Laura.
"I just thank God for them and I'm so thankful that they are such a blessing to us," Barker said.
Pastor Banks is thankful to the many organizations and volunteers who have stepped up to donate and help out. He says the church will continue distributions on Tuesdays and Fridays.
He says not only is the church there to help with supplies, but they have people there if anyone needs to discuss the stress of Hurricane Laura and they have crews to help remove debris.
Banks said, "We're in it for the long haul. We're not packing up and moving like other organizations. We're going to be here until our people recover."
