The Calcasieu School system has sent out an update on how school will proceed in the wake of Hurricane Laura.

They're setting up a virtual program for students who weren't already enrolled in the system's virtual school, and asking parents to fill out surveys to help them plan. They say they'd like to start school as early as September 28.

Here's the update:

The safety and well-being of our faculty and staff is essential in the success of future educational plans. We are in the process of contacting our employees to find out their individual situations. Our faculty and staff can check their email accounts for more information.

The district is hoping to finalize plans for virtual instruction very soon and begin offering it as early as September 28. With that being said, we need some assistance from our families to make this happen. We are asking families to please complete the attached short survey for each of their students.

CPSB Student Enrollment Survey

This virtual plan is for ALL CPSB students and is not affiliated with the virtual program (CPSB Connected Classrooms) that was originally planned for the 20-21 school year. The survey is available now and will remain open until September 20. This form will need to be completed for all CPSB students, whether they were enrolled in our face-to-face or virtual option for this school year.

This virtual plan will be our primary educational option until our schools and facilities are ready for students to return in a face-to-face environment. As individual schools are repaired and ready for students, they will be reopened. This may lead to some schools in a community being open before others, but it’s important for us to open our physical classrooms as soon as possible.

We know that many families will have questions as to the details of this plan. We do not have all of the answers at this time, but we are actively working on all aspects of the plan to offer as much information to families as possible including device/internet access, course offerings, orientation, and much more. Please bear with us as we work out all of the details. If you need assistance or have questions about the survey, please send an email to virtual@cpsb.org.

It is important to note that all of these educational plans are tentative pending the restoration of power to our parish. We will keep families updated as new developments occur. As it’s only been a short time since our community was impacted by the strongest storm to ever hit SWLA, we appreciate your patience during this time. We are all navigating the aftermath of Hurricane Laura together.
