Kaplan residents marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a meal and march along MLK Drive in the city.

New Beginnings Primitive Baptist Church started the day with a celebration meal at 10:00 am at the church. Following the celebration meal, church and community members gathered on MLK Drive for a march to honor the legacy of Dr. King.

Church member and Evangelist Marvette Johnson says that the yearly celebration brings together community members to honor Dr. King’s legacy through community service.

“When we look back on history, to the rights we’ve received through the work of the civil rights era, we understand the sacrifices that were made,” says Johnson. “With that, we can continue to fight, to move forward and know that all is not lost.”

The march, which began at 1:00 pm, ended at the Church where services were held.

In preparation for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, members of the church held a cleanup day on Saturday, January 19.
