Louisiana State Police and Buckle Up Louisiana partnered up Saturday to host the first of two car seat giveaways in Lafayette.
The giveaways are taking place at Westmark Shopping Center on Congress Street and are open to families impacted by Hurricanes Laura and Delta. If you missed Saturday's giveaway, another is scheduled for Saturday, December 5, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
"It's not just getting the seat, we also do installation and teaching," explained Tpr. Thomas Gossen, Troop I Public Information Officer. "So there's education that goes along with the installation. Very important, because 95% of seats are installed incorrectly. So we want to educate the public on how to do that safely and properly."
Car seats and installation are both free, but those interested must register first. To register, visit Buckle Up Louisiana's Facebook page or reach out to Tpr. Gossen at thomas.gossen@la.gov for a link to register. There's no deadline to register, but the sooner the better.
LSP is also partnering with University Medical Center New Orleans on the giveaways.
If you miss these events, car seat inspections are conducted every Wednesday at LSP Troop I from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. or by appointment.
Child Safety Seat Inspections are conducted every Wednesday at Troop Ion East Pont Des Mouton from 8:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M., or by appointment. For appointments, reach out to Tpr. Gossen at the above email address.
