A transgender woman from St. Martin Parish will represent part of Acadiana on the Democratic State Central Committee.

Voters in St. Martin, St. Landry and Iberia Parishes elected Peyton Michelle to the District 46 seat on Saturday.

Michelle says she hopes her election serves as an inspiration to other members of the LGBT community.

"It shows, myself included, all LGBTQ people that we can do something. We are empowered. There might be nay-sayers or people that are opposing us, but it doesn't matter because if we try hard enough, we can prevail," Michelle said.
