Three nursing homes in Acadiana have received shipments of personal protective equipment as part of the federal government's response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic.

On May 2, the White House Coronavirus Task Force and the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced they were coordinating two shipments totaling a 14-day supply of PPE to nearly 15,000 nursing homes across the country.

In Louisiana, 27 nursing homes have received those PPE shipments so far in May.

In Acadiana, three nursing homes have received PPE shipments:

  • Louisiana Extended Care Hospital of Lafayette, 2810 Ambassador Caffery Parkway, Lafayette - 5/19/2020
  • Bethany Health Care Center, 406 St. Julien St., Lafayette - 5/22/2020
  • Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home, 1610 Evangeline Highway, Jennings - 5/19/2020

According to FEMA, the shipping of PPE to Medicaid- and Medicare-certified nursing homes was based on input from the American Health Care Association to serve as a bridge between other PPE shipments.

FEMA stated in a release that the agency would send the first shipments with a seven-day supply starting in May, and a second wave in early June.

The total estimated amount of PPE includes more than 11.7 million surgical masks, nearly 53.3 million gloves, more than 1.2 million goggles and other eye protection, and nearly 12.9 million gowns.

Each facility will receive an allotment of all four items based on the medical staff size of the facility, which ranges from fewer than 10 employees to nearly 500.
