The Women's Foundation, Acadiana Area Human Services District hosts opioid educational event

In December of 2018 a panel of experts submitted recommendations to the Louisiana Department of Health for addressing the opioid epidemic in Louisiana. Recommendations in this plan include a commitment to training and education for healthcare providers. These educational sessions will play a major role in addressing this epidemic and protecting Louisiana citizens against opioid related deaths and addictions. Speakers from all over the nation will be in attendance including Petros Levounis, MD, MA; Declan Barry, PhD; Scott Arseneaux; and Winford Amos, MBA, LPC, LAC. Woman's Foundation, in partnership with Acadiana Area Human Services District, will be hosting an opioid related educational event this Friday, Nov. 8, 2019 from 8 am to 3 pm. This educational event is designed specifically to meet the educational needs for social workers, counselors, health care professionals, and those passionate about harm reduction strategies to confront our state's epidemic.

The Women's Foundation and Acadiana Area Human Services District 302 held an opioid related educational event today.

The meeting was designed to meet the educational needs for social workers, counselors, and others who are passionate about harm reduction strategies to confront the state opioid epidemic.

According to the groups, from 2014-2018, opioid-involved overdoses in Louisiana increased by 500 percent.

Charles King, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Northwestern State University, explained, "Individuals need to be aware that we are in an epidemic when it comes to opioids. I want individuals to understand that this has really taken over, and education is the key."
