The City of Morgan City is looking into the closure of floodgates along the Atchafalaya River in town due to the threat of rising waters.

Officials say the river gauge shows that the water level has risen slightly. Because of this, the city is taking precautionary actions. The forecast for this weekend calls for solid to heavy rain at, and above MC into the Basin.

Chief Administrative Officer  Marc Folse says that water is right at the edge on our Freret Street gate and with the forecast showing more possible rains the gate at Railroad Avenue and Feret Street will close.

Those closures are set for Friday morning, January 18, 2019.

The South Front Street. Gate near Brashear Avenue will remain open unless conditions show that closure is necessary.

“Strong north winds will follow and hopefully solve the problem for us and we will re-open soon after that,” Folse said.

The Coast Guard has already issued high water restrictions to large towing vessels traveling within the Berwick Bay vessel traffic zone.
