The Louisiana Department of Health announced that they will be awarding $500,000 grants to two Louisiana parishes for the creation of mosquito abatement districts.

The department says that St. Mary and Assumption parish will be awarded the grants today at 1:00 pm in Baton Rouge. Both parishes have seen cases of West Nile virus this year. Among the 72 reported cases in Louisiana, one was from Assumption and three more were reported in St. Mary.

The grants will fund the purchase of equipment and supplies for the creation of each parish’s mosquito abatement district. East Baton Rouge Parish will also be awarded a $605,000 grant to purchase a tire shredder for its Mosquito and Rodent Control District.

Grants are funded through an agreement with the Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
