St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested a New Iberia man Tuesday after a chase through a cane field.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon when deputies patrolling in the Baldwin area were sent to investigate a complaint about someone riding four-wheelers in a cane field on Penn Road. The people on the ATVs were wearing bandanas over their faces, deputies say.

This interested deputies because lately thefts had been reported in the area, committed by people on ATVs, a spokesman said. Also, they knew of at least one ATV that had been stolen, from the Charenton area, in June.

The deputies found the ATVs, and started chasing them because the riders wouldn’t stop. Two of the riders dumped their ATVs and ran away. The deputies checked those ATVs and learned they were both stolen, the spokesman said.

Deputies continued to search the area, and a short time later they found a man and a woman, who had an injured ankle, walking on Penn Road. The woman was sent to the hospital for treatment, and the man was identified as one of the ATV riders who fled on foot.

Dustin Frederick, 35, was booked with possession of stolen things. His bond was set at $5,000.

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office was contacted, and allegedly more stolen property has been found at Frederick’s home.

The investigation is related to theft investigations in the Baldwin area and is ongoing.  Additional arrests are expected.

Sheriff Scott Anslum and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Baldwin Police Department, Chitamacha Police Department, and the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for their involvement and assistance in the investigation, the spokesman said.
