A man from Napoleonville is dead after deputies say he drowned in Belle River.

According to a spokeswoman with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office, 43-year-old Darrow Leonard was attempting to pull his boat out of the river when the boat drifted back into the water. He attempted to retrieve the boat, but, for unknown reasons, he went underwater and did not resurface, the spokeswoman said.

St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s deputies were called to Levee Road to investigate at 3:30 p.m.

At 4:15 p.m., deputies with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and Belle River Fire and Rescue recovered his body.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries also assisted in the recovery.
