St. Martin Parish Sheriff Ronny Theriot has announced today that he will retire at the end of his term in 2020.

First elected to the office in 2003, Theriot has served as sheriff of St. Martin Parish for the past 15 years. Theriot was sworn in for his fourth term as sheriff on July 1, 2016. That term will end on June 30, 2020.

Theriot says in a press release that his decision to retire will allow him to enter a new chapter of his life. He adds that he has been “humbled by the trust my fellow citizens have placed in me and with those whom I serve.”

A native of St. Martin Parish, Theriot has worked in law enforcement for over five decades serving as a member of the U.S. Air Force Military Police, in Vietnam, with Louisiana State Police, and as Sheriff of St. Martin Parish, according to a release.

Theriot is credited with expanding the capabilities of the department by consolidating and improving facilities, technology, and resources available to officers. That includes the addition of public-use shooting range.

As his term continues, Theriot says his focus will be on maintaining his commitment to public safety by enhancing training for all St. Martin Parish deputies.
