ST. MARTINVILLE–Police Chief Ricky Martin will return to work Tuesday.

Martin served a two-day suspension beginning Friday and ending Monday. According to Mayor Melinda Mitchell, she suspended Martin after he used what she called vulgar language in her office. Mitchell says her relationship with Martin is “great,” and she’s ready to move forward.

“I feel that this is done,” Mitchell said following Monday’s city council meeting. “He’s good. I’m good. He did specify he knew he did something that was not appropriate, and he did apologize. We’re trying to forget it, put it behind us, and put it behind us for the best interests of our constituents and the safety of our community.”

At that meeting, the city council approved a new garbage contract with Republic Services that city leaders say will bring lower rates to residents. That contract includes recycling and brush collection.

The council also opted out of its five-year contract with Cleco. The contract will expire on January 1. The council will take new bids and decide which bid it will accept during a meeting on September 10. Cleco is expected to put in a bid during that meeting.
