UPDATE: This morning, Giles Automotive presented a check for $108,000 to the pastors of the burned churches.
This past Sunday, the pastors of Mt. Pleasant, St. Mary and Greater Union Baptist churches received checks of more than $860,000 each, the result of a national GoFundMe campaign. To read about that, click here.
Today, they received another check, the result of a fundraising campaign by Giles Automotive.
The campaign, Giles Gives Back to St. Landry Churches, set a goal to raise $50,000 which Giles Automotive would match dollar for dollar for a total donation of $100,000.
That goal was exceeded, thanks to donations from Acadiana and also other parts of the country, including California and Oregon, organizers said.
The final tally was more than $108,000.
The checks will be given to the pastors and members of those churches Thursday at Giles Nissan Opelousas which is located at 4383 I-49 South Service Road.
“The members of our community have really out done themselves, and I want to thank everyone that helped this campaign become an amazing success,” Bob Giles said. “The donations just keep coming, and it has been really touching to see the compassion people all over the country had for what happened in St. Landry Parish. Coming together to help those in need is why Giles Automotive created Giles Gives Back, and it is uplifting to see the community and the nation come together to help rebuild what was taken from the members of these churches.”
Donations can still be made to Giles Gives Back to St. Landry Churches through the IBERIABANK. The $50,000 match from Giles Automotive, as well as all other proceeds will be distributed evenly between St. Mary’s Baptist Church, Greater Union Baptist Church, and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
