12:36 pm UPDATE: Police have identified the victim in this morning’s shooting.
Keaven Breaux, 29, of Grand Coteau, died this morning after being shot at his home, police said. He was alive when help arrived, and was transported to an Opelousas hospital, then to a Lafayette hospital, where he died, police said.
Police also have located one of the two vehicles that were stolen: the black Buick Regal was found on Harry Guilbeau Road, police say.
Chief Wilton Guidry tells KATC that the suspects will be found, and will be booked with first-degree murder. He said this is the first homicide he’s worked during his time as chief, and he will find these suspects “no matter what.”
11:00 am UPDATE: The victim in this morning’s shooting has died, a police spokeswoman says.
The shooting is now being investigated as a homicide.
According to Grand Coteau Police Chief Wilton Guidry, this morning’s now fatal shooting on Bellemin Street was the result of an attempted armed robbery of a residence.
Guidry tells KATC that three suspects, identified only as two men and one woman, attempted to break into a residence in the 500 block of Bellemin Street. The incident happened around 5:00 am on Monday morning.
A family of four, including a husband, wife, and two kids were home at the time of the break-in, according to the chief. The husband was shot during the break-in and was taken to a hospital for treatment. It was confirmed with KATC that he succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
Police say the suspects fled the scene in two vehicles: A 2017 Grey Charger with dark tinted windows and a 2017 black Buick Regal.
