The Opelousas Police Department has new units.

Fourteen officers received those new cars on Friday.

City officials say these new vehicles will help the department become more efficient while keeping officers safe.

“The policeman’s cruiser is his office. So, hopefully, by them being in the newer equipment, they will feel more comfortable, they’ll be better prepared to do their jobs, they’ll be better equipped to do their jobs in protecting the City of Opelousas,” said Major Mark Guidry.

Mayor Julius Alsandor says this is a good first step in revitalizing the city.

“We’re trying to rebrand the City of Opelousas to create the positive that all of us as a community want. This is just one of the first steps. This is part of that new Opelousas: putting new units out on the streets, letting people see the visibility of the police, which will serve as a deterrent to those who want to do wrong.”
