EUNICE (KATC) – A Eunice man has been arrested, accused of firing a gun over a dozen times during an argument on Chataignier Street.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested 20-year-old Travontay Markell Guillory. He is accused of firing a gun multiple times in the air in an attempt to scare off a person arguing with a family member.  He was charged with Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.

The incident according to deputies occurred Tuesday, February 26 in the 200 block of Chataignier Street.

When deputies arrived they were told that  Guillory fired a handgun at least 13 times in the air during a verbal confrontation between his mother and another person. The disagreement, according to deputies, was in reference to the sale of puppies.

According to deputies, Guillory told officers that he was told that the person arguing with his mother was in possession of a gun in his vehicle. Guillory then stated he witnessed what he thought was the person reaching for something between his legs while backing his vehicle to leave. Guillory stated he then began shooting his firearm into the air in an attempt to scare off the person and to protect his family.

Guillory was arrested and transported to the parish jail. His bond was set at $7,500.

“A person has the right to protect his life or another person’s life when in imminent danger to losing his life or receiving great bodily harm. No person is allowed to blindly shoot into the air and put innocent people’s lives in danger,” Sheriff Guidroz stated.
