Police are identifying the pedestrian killed in a crash last night in Opelousas.
Chief Donald Thomspon says 54-year-old Mark Wayne Jones, of Opelousas, was committing a theft in the Walmart on Creswell Lane when he was approached by an employee.
He then fled the store onto I-49 where was he was hit by two vehicles, the second being an 18-wheeler.
Police say the driver of the first vehicle stopped, but the driver of the 18-wheeler didn’t realize they hit anyone.
This stretch of the interstate is notorious for fatal pedestrian-involved accidents. Opelousas police told KATC in 2013 that typically one person is killed trying to cross I-49 in that area every year. Police said it is illegal to cross the interstate.
