A male pedestrian is dead after being hit by a couple of vehicles, one of which was an 18-wheeler, on I-49 in Opelousas, police confirm.
The accident happened around 8 p.m.
Police believe the person may have committed a theft at the Walmart on Creswell Lane and then fled the store before being hit.
Chief Thompson says the first driver who hit the pedestrian stopped, but the driver of the 18-wheeler didn’t realize they hit anyone.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
This stretch of the interstate is notorious for fatal pedestrian-involved accidents. Opelousas police told KATC in 2013 that typically one person is killed trying to cross I-49 in that area every year. Police said it is illegal to cross the interstate.
