Man arrested in connection with overnight shooting in Opelousas

An Opelousas man has been arrested in connection with an overnight shooting in 1600 block of Frilot Street that left one person injured.

The Opelousas Police Department says that 25-year-old Dwayne Simmons of Opelousas was arrested and booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, armed robbery, and introduction of contraband at a penal institution.

Simmons is currently housed in the St. Landry Parish Jail. No bond was given.

A spokesperson with the department says that one person suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was transported to the hospital as a result of the incident. The condition of the victim is unknown at this time.
