A Crowley man died Saturday night in a crash near Cankton.

Destin Hail, 22, died a single-vehicle crash on La. 93 near Chris Road in St. Landry Parish, State Police say.

The accident happened at about 10:30 p.m.

State Police say Hail was traveling southbound on the highway in a pick-up truck. For unknown reasons, the truck ran off the road to the right side of the road, and hit a utility pole, fence and tree.

Neither Hail nor his passenger were wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle. Hail sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene. His 18-year-old passenger sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Hail for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained.

Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death, State Police say.
