The Community Foundation of Acadiana is holding its South Louisiana (SOLA) Giving Day on Thursday, May 7, beginning at midnight and ending at 11:59:59 p.m.

SOLA Giving Day is a 24-hour online fundraising event for 93 nonprofit organizations, churches, and schools that serve Acadiana.

According to a release from CFA, the COVID-19 crisis has impacted organizations and many of them canceled their Spring fundraising events. Some organizations have shifted their work to focus on COVID-19 response and relief efforts by providing free meals to families, children, and the elderly.

Organizations are providing free medical support for those with mental illness and physical disabilities, CFA states, and several schools are raising funds to help students with the cost of tuition for the Fall semester due to parents losing their jobs.

CFA says there are several simple ways to contribute. Anyone can donate to support their favorite cause and organization using a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone by visiting www.solagivingday.org.

Donors who have a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) at Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) can submit a contribution at www.solagivingday.org during the check-out process.

Checks are accepted and must be dropped off at CFA’s office located at 1035 Camellia Boulevard, Suite 100, before 11:59:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.

Currently, matching gift donations totaling $293,700 have been secured to support more than 25 organizations, the release states.

A matching donation is a charitable contribution by private donors that will match the general public’s donations dollar for dollar. A list of the organizations that have received matching gifts can be found online at www.solagivingday.org/matchinggifts.

CFA says that SOLA Giving Day will award $10,000 in cash prizes to top-performing organizations that receive the most donations in several categories. The list of prizes can be viewed at www.solagivingday.org/prizes.

They add that this prize money was provided by private donations to the 2019 SOLA Giving Day Gumbo Fund, and by a grant from the William C. Schumacher Family Foundation in gratitude for the community support of the Love Our Schools and Love Our Community initiatives.
