New Year's Eve is a unique holiday, and it's one time during the year when a large number of pets get lost or go missing.

"Unfortunately if a pet is left alone and they start hearing all of this noise, they are going to try and run for safety," explained Lynn Bourque, Adoption Supervisor at Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Center. "They don't know that the fireworks are not going to hurt them."

Some pets will be new to households since Christmas and will be even more startled when the celebration begins.

"The best thing to do is to bring your pet indoors. Make sure your pet has something that keeps them feeling safe," added Bourque.

The most important thing to ensure your pet's safety tonight is to create a safe space for them with items that make them feel comfortable, such as pillows, blankets, their favorite toys, and even an article of clothing that smells like you.

"Have the TV on. Leave the TV on all night, loud enough so that it can must some of the fireworks."

Lafayette Animal Shelter also encourages all owners to ensure their pets have proper identification tags on tonight with up-to-date information.
