The Lafayette Fire Department has confirmed that a lightning strike caused heavy damage to an apartment unit at Park Place Apartments.
Spokesman for the department Alton Trahan says that the fire in that location along Belle Fontaine Drive damaged one unit. No one was home at the time of the fire.
Neighbors called 911 after seeing and smelling the smoke.
The fire heavily damaged the interior of the unit located on the second floor of the building.
Another fire in the Parish is located on Soulanges Road. Crews there are battling a house fire. It is unknown if lightning caused that fire.
Those who live nearby say that lightning did cause this fire. They tell us that the homeowner said lightning struck an air conditioning unit and started the fire.
It appears to be a total loss.
Milton, Maurice, and Abbeville Fire Departments handled that scene along with Lafayette.
Crews were also investigated other reports of fires in the Parish. Those were cleared with no reports of any damage.
