This past week, the Comeaux High Speech Team attended the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament in Dallas.

A spokesperson for the team says there were about 5,000 students representing 1600 schools from more than 17 countries at the tournament.

Students compete in Speech and Debate. Each of the 12 competition events started with more than 400 students.

The final round performances are filmed in a convention center on a stage in front of 4,000 people and are live streamed; the spokesperson estimated that 50,000 people were watching the livestream.

Jamie Jones and Taylor Mier made it to the top 60 in the Duo Interp category.

Emily Guidry took fifth place in the POI category, and won a scholarship of $500.

Josh Moton was Champion in the Poetry category, receiving a scholarship for $1,000.

Rashon Leday was Champion in the Prose category, and received a scholarship for $1,000.

Jacob Foster was Champion in the Dramatic Interpretation category, and received a scholarship for $1,000.

The spokesperson said Comeaux is the first school in the tournament’s 90-year history to have three champions at one event.
