A fundraiser for the Respire Haiti organization was held today at Le Triomphe Golf and Country Club.
Today’s fundraiser, hosted by Friends of Respire Haiti, is the first event held for the organization.
“We here in America have a remarkable standard of living and when you look at how other people in the world live they don’t live like we do,” volunteer Larry Lemaire says. “Every time I go to Haiti and come back I kiss the ground that I return to.”
Respire Haiti is a non-profit with a mission of educating, empowering and encouraging orphans and vulnerable children in Haiti. The event offered Haitians an opportunity to connect, educate community members about the organization, and discuss ways to donate or get involved.
Respire Haiti was founded by Megan Boudreaux when she was 24 years old. After previously visiting Gressier only one time before for 45 minutes, she says God began working in her heart. Later, when she returned to the United States, He began to pull her heart back towards Gressier and its children. In December of 2010, God gave Megan a vision for this community and their children. With so many children not attending school and so many families struggling to provide for their kids, she moved to Gressier permanently in January of 2011 and began helping the children and people of Gressier.
Since its founding, the group has built schools and health facilities for the children in Haiti, with hopes and plans to build more.
