Youngsville speller eliminated from Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee continues today with its second day of stage competition.

During Round 3 of the competition Wednesday morning, Youngsville speller Alyssa Walker was eliminated after incorrectly spelling the word “Seoul,” the capital of South Korea. Walker gave the spelling as S-A-H-O-U-L.

Spellers Bre’Ann Washington of Monroe and Zalia Avant-garde of Harvey were eliminated after spelling their words incorrectly this morning.

Three other Louisiana spellers, Devika Dua of Ruston, Cal Alexander of Shreveport, and Isaac Phillips of Ponchatoula spelled their words correctly in Round 3. A list of the spellers and their words can be found below.

565 spellers gathered at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland for 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

After taking a preliminaries test on Monday, May 27, spellers took to the stage in groups to take on Round 2 – spelling.

Following that round, 47 spellers had been eliminated. 518 spellers moved onto Round 3 which began on Tuesday evening with Group 1 and continued this morning with Group 2.

The six spellers from Louisiana are a part of Group 2. All six spellers made it through Round 2 by spelling their words correctly. A list of those spellers and their words follows.

Following Round 3 three Louisiana spellers had been eliminated and three remained in the competition.

Walker, 14, of Youngsville moved into Round 3 on Tuesday after correctly spelling the word “satrap,” a noun meaning “the governor of a province in ancient Persia.”
