The City of Broussard will pay tribute to a local Army veteran with a memorial.

Sergeant Patrick Williamson went to St. Cecilia School and graduated from St. Thomas More Catholic High School in Lafayette before enlisting in the Army in 2006.

Sgt. Williamson died in the line of duty in Afghanistan in 2009.

His memorial will be located at the roundabout at the newly finished South Bernard Road and West Fairfield Drive.

Williamson’s parents were invited to the last city council meeting for a presentation on the project. Mayor Ray Bourque said he and the council were humbled by their attendance and that Mr. and Mrs. Williamson were moved and honored by the news.

Mayo Bourque predicts construction of the memorial will take about a year.

“I think this memorial will be very meaningful for the City of Broussard, not only for people who knew Sergeant Patrick Williamson, but for people who know his parents, people that are veterans of our city. And, it just honors the great things that our military does for us every day,” said Mayor Bourque.
