About 40 percent of trauma-related deaths are caused by uncontrolled bleeding.

The Louisiana Department of Health is hoping to change that by educating the public on how to Stop the Bleed.

This Saturday, May 18 LDH will be showing people how to apply a proper tourniquet.

Studies show that if help is given immediately, it could be the difference between life and death.

Tina Stefanski of the Office of Public Works says that the workshop is not for medical professionals but for civilians. “So you have the tools you need to in those first few minutes that are extremely critical before EMS are local law enforcement arrive.”

The program is designed to empower the general public to make a difference in a life-threatening emergency by teaching them the basic techniques of bleeding control.

The event is happening this Saturday at the Lafayette Public Library on West Congress.

The workshop will take place from 9:30 am to 11:00 am and is free to the public.
