In Lafayette, deputies are searching for suspects after a car was stolen and nearly two-dozen were burglarized overnight.

The men were caught on camera going through several vehicles on Longfellow Drive Tuesday night.

“They knew what they were doing and exactly what steps they needed to take and they were just very, very comfortable with what they were doing,” said Longfellow Drive resident Margaret Silver.

Once the suspects were inside the car, they’d rummage through and once they found something of value like a wallet, they were on to their next target.

“It doesn’t really make me feel unsafe,” Silver said. “It just makes me frustrated and angry that they feel like it’s something they’re entitled to do.”

Residents say the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office quickly responded.

“They did some fingerprint scans and I know they have a lot of houses that were hit. They’re trying to find everyone responsible for this,” said one man who did not want to go on camera.

Lt. John Mowell of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office said, “We applaud people getting camera systems. That’s definitely a great resource for us investigating these crimes.”

Mowell said aside from locking your car doors, make sure you have good lighting and do not leave valuables in plain sight.
