A new initiative aimed at helping public schools was launched today.
The parish-wide educational program “Love Our Schools” was officially announced at Lafayette Middle School this afternoon. It’s a program co-founded by Love Acadiana and the William C. Schumacher Family Foundation.
Organizers say it is aimed at “transforming public schools and elevating our community.”
The groups are partnering with the school system in the effort.
Their plans include an event this summer when volunteers will gather at eight local schools to make physical improvements and enhancements, provide backpacks filled with supplies for 5000 students, and provide resources to 600 teachers and staff, organizers say.
A statement from the groups says:
“Love Our Schools provides an opportunity for individuals and private businesses alike to be a part of a pivotal change in our community, providing the funds and manpower necessary to empower our students, teachers and staff and to show them that people care. Our community’s future begins in our schools, and it’s time to take a stand…to be a part of the change, to uplift our students, teachers and staff.”
