Parents of children with disabilities are getting a better understanding of the education process.

Today, with the help of AOC Community Media, the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, a national nonprofit of parents, advocates, attorneys and related professionals, offered a free training session for those parents at the Rosa Parks Transportation Center in downtown Lafayette.

Parents learned about their rights as guardians and their children’s rights under the law.

The training session also offered advice on how to communicate with the school, what questions to ask at each point in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process, and information on the differences and similarities in special education services provided by traditional public schools and charter schools.

The session allowed parents to answer questions about each portion.

The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates will be hosting a conference March 7-10 in New Orleans.
