Teens arrested in connection with vacant shed fire in Lafayette

Two teens have been arrested in connection with a fire that occurred at a shed behind a vacant building in Lafayette.

Lafayette firefighters say that the fire occurred around 2:34 pm behind a vacant building at 800 East Vermilion Street. Upon arrival, firefighters say that heavy smoke could be seen coming from a shed at the back of the property. The fire was quickly extinguished, according to the department. The building sustained heavy fire damage.

Fire officials say that the building was vacant and had no utilities. The cause of the fire was determined to be arson.

Two teens have been arrested for allegedly starting the fire. The suspects, 19-year-old Otis Key of Houma and 18-year-old Katherine Cass of Lafayette were booked on charges of Negligent Arson.

Both suspects are currently housed at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
