A Lafayette Parish student has started a petition to allow students to wear sweatpants when it’s cold.

Savannah O’Connor says the rules at David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy only allow students to wear khakis, but she says they’re thin and don’t provide much coverage from the cold.

According to O’Connor, there is fear from both students and parents about getting sick from not having enough coverage.

The student says athletes wear sweatpants to school whether there is a game or practice, and she doesn’t believe that’s fair to non-athletes.

Assistant Superintendent Joe Craig says the current policy does not allow sweatpants; however, they are aware of the concern and are looking into the issue.
