Kindergarten and first-grade students are stepping out of the classroom and into the firehouse to learn more about fire safety.
Firefighters will be giving about one-thousand students tours of the fire station and fire truck this week for Fire Prevention Week.
The students are also learning about fire drills and how to check smoke detectors
“Making sure they understand that kids should not play with lighters and matches,” said Alton Trahan, spokesman for the Lafayette Fire Department. “They should not go near a stove that’s hot. They can burn themselves and also what to do in case there’s a fire out, and what’s the emergency number to call, which is 911.”
