LAFAYETTE – Parents are getting tips for free on how to properly install their child’s car seat, thanks to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

State troopers and certified technicians were across the state today, conducting safety inspections.

Dozens stopped by the former Babies “R” Us in Lafayette to ensure their children’s safety.

“In Louisiana, we have about a 92-percent misuse rate, and car crashes are the leading cause of death of children and happen every 3 minutes in our state. So, we have to be sure that everybody is properly restrained so that we can reduce the injuries and potential fatalities,” said Tracy LeMaire, regional coordinator for the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force.

Today’s statewide inspections are part of National Child Passenger Safety Week.
