(PRESS RELEASE) This September, the Lafayette Public Library is joining forces with The Incredibles, the American Library Association and libraries nationwide to promote the value of a library card. Library Card Sign-up Month is to remind families, students and people of all ages that signing up for a library card is a great step toward a truly super lifestyle.
Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
“The library offers exciting programs, online learning, databases, books, DVDs, music, and more, all free of charge with your library card,” says Keith Guidry, Community Relations Coordinator.
As new technologies evolve, libraries continue to lead the way by providing access to digital tools and media, which has become increasingly important in high-poverty areas where students are less likely to have a computer or internet service at home. Students can turn to their public library for materials, programs and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement. “A library card offers so many things that a student may not have at home: quiet study rooms, Wi-Fi, and in some cases, a working computer and printer.”
The Lafayette Public Library is excited to announce the addition of two limited-edition library cards for 2018. The public is welcome to visit any branch to sign-up for a commemorative card, featuring “Louisiana Flora” by local artist Cayla Mattea Zeek, or Disney-Pixar’s The Incredibles. Both cards will be available throughout the remainder of the year.
Cayla Mattea Zeek graduated from UL Lafayette in 2015 with a degree in painting. Her artwork is characterized by mixed media layering process with watercolor, pen, charcoal, acrylic, and oil on canvas. She gathers inspirations from her many travels as well as her experiences growing up as a young woman in Louisiana. She has shown her artwork through many exhibitions in galleries of Downtown Lafayette, Breaux Bridge, and New Orleans.
