Even though the Mardi Gras celebrations will be a bit different because of COVID-19, the Krewe of Rio is kicking off the festivities Friday.

The Krewe of Rio's King and Queen were announced during Mardi Gras night at the Acadiana Cane Cutters game. Gil and Tanya Zaunbrecher will reign as Rio royalty for next year's Carnival season.

"It was a little odd this year, but we proud to do it. We're happy to get out there and represent our Krewe no matter what's going on, follow whatever guidelines we're given. It's nice to be representing," said Gil Zaunbrecher.

Organizers asked everyone to mask up and enjoy the fun. The Cane Cutters also are taking precautions, spacing out fans in the stands.

This year's royalty were announced during the first pitch.
