The Welsh Police Department says that around 8:00 pm an officer stopped a vehicle on I-10 due to a traffic violation. During the stop, police say the officer smelled the odor of burnt marijuana. When asked if there was marijuana in the vehicle, the driver, identified by police as 29-year-old Tristan Williams, allegedly handed a small hand rolled joint to the officer.

Williams was asked to exit the vehicle and stand to the rear of the car. Police say that Williams exited but jumped back into the vehicle in an attempt to flee. The officer tried to stop Williams by using his taser, but the department says he was unsuccessful.

A pursuit ensued down I-10 towards Lake Charles.

Welsh Police say that Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D deployed spike strips at the bottom of the 210 bridge in Lake Charles to end the pursuit.

Williams was arrested and and booked into the Welsh City jail on the following charges:

  • Driving in the left lane
  • Failure to yield to other vehicles
  • Driving on the shoulder
  • Passing failure to signal
  • Following to close
  • Reckless operation of motor vehicle
  • Aggravated flight in a vehicle
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Driving under suspension
