The Iberia Parish School Board will meet Monday to discuss the closure of two elementary schools.

Since last week, we’ve been requesting information about the possible closure. To see that story, click here.

The items to be considered at the 5 p.m. meeting are:

  • Consolidate Jeanerette Elementary and St. Charles Street Schools at the St. Charles Street facility.
  • Relocate the Alternative Center for Education (ACE) at the North Street facility and rezone North Street Elementary students to Daspit Road Elementary and Park Elementary Schools.

All school board meetings are open to the public.

All school board meetings also are required, by law, to allow public comment prior to a vote on an item.

The Louisiana legislative auditor’s site has a guide to public meetings. You can read it here.

It states, in part: “School boards are required to allow public comment before taking any vote. The comment period shall be for each agenda item and shall precede each agenda item. R.S. 42:15(A).”

That law states, in part:

“Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, each school board subject to the provisions of this Chapter, except as provided in Subsection B of this Section, shall allow public comment at any meeting of the school board prior to taking any vote. The comment period shall be for each agenda item and shall precede each agenda item.”

For purpose of the public meetings law in Louisiana, a committee meeting is treated the same as a regular board meeting.

The members of the committee are:

Elvin Pradia, Chairman
Brad M. Norris, Vice-chairman
Jay J. McDonald
Dan L. LeBlanc, Sr.
Danny D. Segura
Debra A. Savoie
Raymond “Shoe-Do” Lewis
Dana P. Dugas, President
