UPDATE: New Iberia Police say the package they investigated this morning on Main Street wasn’t dangerous.

A spokesman said they’ve determined who left it there, and are looking for that person now.

They’re still looking into reports that the suspicious package was reported to them days ago.

Several viewers have called KATC to say they reported the package days ago to New Iberia Police; one said they reported the package on Monday and another said they reported it on Friday.

Capt. John Babin, spokesman for the department said they have heard the same thing and they are looking into it.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The New Iberia Police Department says they are currently working on a suspicious package found in the 400 block of Main Street.

New Iberia Police say that the roadway has been blocked off while authorities respond to the area.

Police ask that everyone in the area of the suspicious package remain where they are. Authorities are unsure what the package may contain and the procedures being taken are out of an abundance of caution.

The State Police Bomb Unit is heading to the scene to investigate.

Photos taken by a viewer show the package sitting next to a blue post office mailbox near the roadway.

Police say that anyone wanting to ship out a package should do so with the proper shipping services. The United States Postal Service says that packages that are more than 13 oz must be taken to a Post Office retail counter in order to ship.
