The Iberia and Lafayette Parks and Recreation Departments have announced this week the cancellation of summer day camps for this year.

IREC announced on Wednesday that the decision to cancel this year's summer camp was made after staff considered several options to determine if the program could be held with proper social distancing, cleaning, and safety measures.

"The health and safety of campers, staff, and families is the Department's number one priority, and ultimately, the Department is not confident all campers and staff would be able to safely enjoy an even modified camp experience."

Officials say because of so many unknown variables and the state's guidelines for summer camps, they decided the risk was too great.

IREC had previously made the decision to cancel spring day camp sessions as well.

Lafayette Parks and Rec on Friday announced that the department would not administer or coordinate the Summer Enrichment Camp/Program or the Therapeutic Day Camp sessions this year.

"We regret having to make this announcement; however, with the current guidelines, we are not able to provide these services," a statement read.
