Two Jeanerette men arrested after high speed chase in Assumption Parish

BAYOU L'OURSE, La. — UPDATE 2-24-2021:

Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reported Wednesday the arrests of Jade M. LeBlanc, 27, of 2040 Georgia St., in Jeanerette, and Cordel Jamal Robinson, 23, of 711 Wattigny St., in Jeanerette, on felony gun and drug law violations stemming from an attempted traffic stop turned high speed pursuit originating on LA 398 Tuesday afternoon.

APSO said a deputy working a patrol observed a vehicle westbound on LA 398 commit a traffic violation and attempted to conduct a stop of that vehicle. The driver continued on at a high rate of speed in excess of 115 MPH prompting a pursuit event.

Additional units were called in to assist and the suspect vehicle struck a spike strip near the U.S. 90 area causing the tires to deflate. The suspects, a white male driver and a black male passenger bailed from the vehicle and entered the swamp.

The driver was captured about an hour later and was identified as LeBlanc.

A search of the suspect vehicle resulted in the seizure of several large caliber firearms as well as suspected marijuana.

A warrant check revealed that LeBlanc was wanted for failure to appear in court in Assumption Parish for previous traffic violations.

Robinson was arrested on Tuesday night near the scene.

Both suspects were booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center.

Jade M. Leblanc was booked on counts of:

  • Aggravated Flight from and Officer
  • Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute
  • Illegal Carrying of Firearms in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Resisting an Officer
  • Driving Under Suspension
  • Failure to Appear – (Assumption Parish) on Charges of Speeding and Driving Under Suspension

Cordel Jamal Robinson was booked on counts of:

  • Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Illegal Possession of Firearms in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
  • Resisting an Officer

Both LeBlanc and Robinson remain incarcerated pending bond proceedings.

ORIGINAL: A high speed chase through Assumption Parish Tuesday resulted in one suspect being arrested and another still at large after their vehicle ran off the highway and into the swamp.

According to Commander Lonny Cavalier with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, a traffic stop was initiated at approximately 3:05 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when the suspect vehicle fled police.

The vehicle fled West on Highway 398 towards Morgan City at speeds in excess of 115 MPH.

Police then laid a spike strip on Highway 662 near Amelia.

When the suspect's vehicle ran over the spike strip, its tires blew out ran off the road, which is when two suspects took off into the swamp.

One officer pursued the suspects into swamp as he waited for assistance.

Cavalier said that at approximately 4:10 p.m., one suspect was taken into custody and is currently being treated by Acadian Ambulance.

Cavalier said that the suspect is a white male from the Jeanerette area and will be booked into the Assumption Parish Jail on traffic, drug and gun law violations. The suspect also has an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court in Assumption Parish.

The identity of the suspect has not been released yet because he has not been booked into jail.

Police are still searching for the second suspect in the swamp.
