According to the Evangeline Today, employees of the Basile Police Department went unpaid on Friday due to lack of funds.

Mayor Mark Denette confirmed those details with the paper. Police Chief Ivory was reportedly the only person compensated for the last two week period.

Michael Thomas, an officer with the department, agreed to patrol the city on Friday, the newspapers reports. Chief Ivory and Asst. Chief Wilbert McClinton were also on call. Other officers have reportedly indicated that they will not be working their shifts until they can be compensated.

Louisiana State Police, Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department, and Evangeline 911 were notified of the situation and reportedly pledged to provide assistance when necessary.

Officials say the situation will likely remain until the end of the fiscal year on July 1.
