The Council on Aging is asking that citizens check with their elderly relatives and neighbors as cold weather moves into Acadiana.

They also add that their Lafayette location on 160 Industrial Parkway is collection donations to keep elderly residents warm. They are in need of new electric space heaters.

Those wishing to donate can drop items off at the Industrial Parkway location

The council says that as individuals age, they naturally create less body heat, which means they are often colder than when we were younger. Due to this fact, elderly individuals are often more vulnerable to the cold.

The State Fire Marshal's Office has also sent out a reminder to residents about safely heating homes and others spaces. Read more here.
