Chenier Plain Marsh Enhancement projects have been awarded $1 million by the U.S. government to enhance 3,950 acres of Louisiana coastal marsh.

The funds were part of $130 million in grants approved by the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission for various wetland conservation projects.

The grants, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior, will be used to ensure waterfowl and other birds are protected and conserve and restore more than 157,000 acres of wetland across the United States.

For the Chenier Plain Marsh projects, funds will be used to improve management capabilities to enhance overall marsh quality and benefit the resident, migratory and wintering bird species that depend on the wetland.

Those projects include the enhancement of a 3,235 acre tract of brackish marsh near Oak Grove and 565 acres of coastal marsh near Grand Chenier in Cameron Parish, and 150 acres of intermediate marsh and shoreline along the northern rim of the Vermilion Bay in Vermilion Parish.

"The Trump Administration continues to support wetland restoration and habitat conservation projects that benefit waterfowl and many other species while improving access to outdoor recreation opportunities on public lands for all Americans," said U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Aurelia Skipwith in a press release.
